Dear Mr. Speaker of The Senate and Mr. Speaker of The House of Commons:
We, the undersigned citizens of Canada, United States of America, Germany, Switzerland, originally from the Republic of Viet Nam, humbly present to the Senate and Parliament of Canada and to the citizens of Canada, our condolences on the occasion of the passing away of The Honorable Pierre Claude Nolin, Speaker of the Canadian Senate.
We would also like to take this opportunity to present to the Senate and Parliament of Canada, our wish as below.
We solemnly oppose the name of the Journey to Freedom Act, resolution, S-219 approved on the 23rd of April 2015.
We oppose the name of the Act because it is irrational and controversial. The 30th day of April in 1975 was the day of the Fall of Saigon, when most of us lost all kinds of freedom, and were not able to make or to join in the "Journey to Freedom". Please understand that we do not oppose the purpose or the “meaning” of Resolution S-219, but we strongly oppose the name of the act.
As such, we, the undersigned, respectfully request the Senate and Parliament of Canada to rescind Resolution S-219 which has been named the Journey to Freedom Act, use another day of the year other than April 30th or another name which reflects our true memories of the day that we lost all human rights, such as The Mourning Day Act or The Black April Day Act.
We also would like to express to you, members of the Senate and the Parliament of Canada, and to the people of Canada, our gratitude for your consideration of our request.
Respectfully,
Thomas Tran, Army Colonel, Pasadena, Texas, USA
